Exploring Divination with Pendulums

Last Updated: August 17th, 2023

A pendulum is a small weight suspended on a piece of thread, string, or chain, often used as a simple way to connect with the other side. Pendulum readings have come to be one of the most popular forms of psychic reading around today. A pendulum is a powerful and reliable tool, which is easy to learn whether you’re a professional or just starting out. The more you use a pendulum the more adept you will become.

You can use just about anything to make a pendulum, as long as it has some weight to it and hangs well. A long shape with a pointed bottom is best, although a round/oval/odd-shaped pendulum can be equally as effective.

Common types of pendulums include:

  • A ring
  • Crystal/gemstone
  • Pendant
  • Metal pointer
  • Coins
  • Keys

Pendulum History

The word ‘pendulum’ is derived from the Latin for ‘pendulus’ meaning ‘hanging.’ It is believed the pendulum became popular as a method of divination around 5,000 years ago in the Ancient Orient, becoming increasingly popular in the Middles Ages. The method lost favour for a while before a renewed interest in the twentieth century.

Can anyone use a pendulum?

Yes! Anyone can learn to use a pendulum for divination, but it is important to bear in mind that we all have different levels of psychic ability. Some people may find it easier to connect with their intuition and ‘read’ the pendulum than others. However, there is no right or wrong way to use a pendulum – it is simply a tool to help you tap into your subconscious mind and intuition. With practice, anyone can learn to use a pendulum for divination.

How to use a dowsing pendulum for divination

Once you have selected a pendulum that you feel comfortable using, you can begin. First, you should completely relax, sit down and clear your mind and emotions. This is really important, as it’s easy to unconsciously influence the pendulum with your personal wants and desires. When consulting the pendulum, you should establish which direction signifies ‘yes’ and which is ‘no’ to be able to understand how it is communicating with you.

To do this simply, hold your pendulum between your thumb and first finger and ask it “show me yes” and “show me no.” You must be completely open to the pendulum’s response – it will guide itself, moved only by your thoughts or a spirit (usually your spirit guide).

Pendulums have a variety of different uses including dowsing, pendulum charts, finding ghosts/spirits, and locating lost objects.

What Type of Questions Can I Ask the Pendulum?

You can ask the pendulum any question you like, but some people prefer to ask ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions as they are simpler to answer. Once you are confident, you can start divining information that you don’t already know. When you have built a good relationship with your pendulum you can begin to use it to determine more than just ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers. Here are some examples of different types of questions you could ask:

Basic ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions:

  • Do I have a spirit guide?
  • Should I take the job?
  • Will I move house?
  • Is my partner – ‘the one’?

Open-ended questions:

How can I improve my pendulum reading skills?

Pendulum readings can be improved with practice. The more you use your pendulum, the more accurate your readings will become. You should also try to keep an open mind and be as objective as possible when asking questions and interpreting results. Remember, the pendulum is a tool to help you connect with your intuition – it is not always accurate, and you should not rely on it for making major life decisions. Trust your instincts and always go with your gut feeling!

Similarly to Tarot cards, it is important to nurture good energy between you and your pendulum. For example, some psychics cleanse their pendulum before each use in order to remove any stagnant energy from previous readings. This can be done using sage, or simply by running the pendulum under cold water. If your pendulum is crystal-based, you can also charge your pendulum with positive energy by holding it in your hands and visualising white light emanating from your palms. Alternatively, leaving the crystal to charge in moonlight or sunlight for a few hours can also work well.

Do I need a pendulum board?

A pendulum board is not essential, but some people prefer to use one as it can help to focus your questions and make the reading process simpler. Pendulum boards usually contain a selection of symbols which you can use to ask specific questions, or they may have letters of the alphabet so that you can spell out words.

What to do after a pendulum reading?

After you have finished your reading, it is important to take some time to meditate and reflect on the information you have received. This time can be used to replenish your energy levels and relax your mind. You may want to journal your thoughts and feelings so that you can look back on them at a later date. Sometimes, taking some time out can help us gain more clarity, so taking notes are a great way to make the most of your reading.

If you are interested in these kinds of readings, then a number of Psychic Light’s readers are fortunate enough to have the gift of reading a pendulum. Why not use a pendulum when calling one of our readers? The pendulum can often create a state of deep concentration, allowing your psychic’s words to penetrate deeper, and clearer.

We look forward to hearing from you!
