History & Mythology

The history and mythology of the Libra star sign goes way beyond simply representing a set of scales. In fact, its origins are directly linked with the story of Virgo, which we discussed here. The ancient Greeks spoke of the two Goddesses of Justice; Themis and her daughter Astraea (immortalised as the constellation Virgo.) Themis embodied and taught mankind about divine law, equilibrium and justice, sitting on the throne at Olympus giving counsel to Zeus. Her function was to maintain peace and harmony on Olympus and to call the Gods and Goddesses to gatherings, both common Libran traits. Themis, as the scales, was placed in the sky as Libra to shine alongside her daughter.

Personality Traits

Unsurprisingly, Librans are naturals at striking balance, rarely going to any extremes and keeping perfect equilibrium. They are famous for their diplomatic skills and ability to listen to differing viewpoints without losing patience.

Librans are well known for their indecisiveness, and they shouldn’t be pressed to decide quickly. They truly want to find the right solution by weighing up all sides of the argument. If you suffer from this as a Libran, be careful not to be swayed by others opinions, and be sure to stand on your own two feet!

They can be very appearance orientated, and that begins with themselves, taking time to make sure they look their best.

Libran Strengths

Librans are known for their tact, as such they make great intermediaries – acting as a mediator or negotiator at work or at home. They can be relied upon to calm opposite opinions and find some middle ground. They have good taste, and bring with them an ability to quiet an atmosphere and make harmonious surroundings.

Libran Weaknesses

The Libra star sign will gloss over difficult details, whether that is in a relationship or at work, if it allows them to feel as if their pursuit of perfection is still in place. But eventually making too many compromises will play out leaving them feeling dissatisfied. Librans wavering and dithering can infuriate others, and on occasion can cause them to be seen as lazy or unable to finish what they started.

Libra at Work

Logical and cooperative, Librans are good team players in the workplace but tend to avoid conflict and overbearing co-workers. Librans eager to please attitude may often find themselves saying ‘yes’ when they should be saying ‘no.’

They like to get things right and will take their time to ensure that happens. They are good networkers and make contacts easily. They are honest in business and will promote good ideas – theirs or others.

They are talkative, although you are unlikely to find them gossiping in the workplace. They like a calm atmosphere at work, a tidy and quiet place that they can work hard.

Their diplomacy skills may lead them into jobs that involve the law or politics, their promotional abilities may cause them to look at sales positions and they enjoy giving presentations and pitching new ideas. Their more creative side may also lead them to pursue careers in fashion, the arts or graphics.

Libra and Love

Librans tend to be emotionally impulsive and love to be in love, this doesn’t always make for smooth sailing in the relationship department. They can have a rose-tinted view of love, and not want to let a bad relationship go, as they are connected to the idea of being in love.

The Libra star sign does enjoy romance, they make for easy-going partners, although they can become emotionally dependant on their other half quite quickly. They will focus on their partner giving their undivided attention, but they are not into public displays of affection. They will ignore a partner’s shortcomings, in order to stay in love!

In a romantic partner they look for someone who will be faithful, loyal and who will care and support them. They are quite happy for the person to have their own friends and interests, and they are happy if they are admired by others.

Libra and Family

As a parent Librans do care about social standing, they want their children to look the part and associate with the right people. From a young age they are mindful of their education and what their future career will be. They will sacrifice to give their children all of the advantages in life in regards to education and hobbies as long as there is an end goal in mind.

As siblings Librans are demanding of attention, both from their parents and brothers/sisters. If they are not getting the attention they crave, they will try one of two tacks – firstly being super active and sparkly hoping others join in. If this does not work, they become moody and sulky. Ultimately, they want to be noticed and to feel part of a group and have all of the family doing an activity.

As children the Libra star sign can be demanding, although they are obedient and respectful. They are likely to take part in school shows and in hobbies where family will be expected to turn up, watch and applaud their endeavours. They are entertaining, and there is unlikely to be a dull moment with a Libra child in the house.

Libra and Friends

As friends, Librans are popular and well liked. All relationships are important to Libra, the sign which simply can’t do without other people. They are eager to please as well as being affectionate, sympathetic and hugely interested in others.

The Libra star sign tends to be sociable and likes to be ‘on the go’, they will work hard to maintain friendships, they keep their emotions in check but despite this are loving friends. They are honest and will be fair if asked for advice.

Friendships are likely to suffer at the hands of Librans inability to decide, making plans, especially ahead of time can bring Librans indecisiveness to the fore. Capricorn, Aries and Cancer may struggle to make a lasting friendship and they would have turbulent times with Pisces and Taurus assuming these signs were holding true to character.

Famous Librans

Librans enjoy the company of people, music and theatrical events, so it’s unsurprising that notable Librans include Simon Cowell, Will Smith, John Lennon, Sharon Osbourne and Gwyneth Paltrow.
