Spring Equinox: Wheel of the Year

Last Updated: March 21st, 2024

Spring Equinox

As the Sun crosses the celestial equator on its way from South to North, we experience equal hours of daylight and darkness. The hours of daylight will continue to increase in duration until Summer Solstice in June. Falling on March 20th 2024, the energy of the Spring Equinox, or Vernal Equinox is one of transformational change. A time to act. To release the past, moving forwards with positivity and intent by using this intense burst of energy as everything moves fast towards the long days of Summer.

Time to Awaken

A time of awakening when everything in nature is coming to life and the days are becoming warmer, is encouraging us to throw off the comfort blankets and emerge into the light. Just as seeds are emerging and growing fast now, we need to awaken and get on with our projects for this season. No more quiet contemplation, for now is the time to make those plans happen in the real world. There’s real excitement in the air!

Our ancestors would have looked directly to the natural world and to the emerging life around them. Living so closely with the seasons, this emerging light and hope alongside the obvious fertility in the birds and animals around them, led to the celebrations which honoured the growth and continuity of life. Eostre was the Germanic Goddess of Light, Fertility and Spring. With this time of year which we now celebrate as Easter come eggs! Painted and rolled down hills or made of delicious chocolate for sweet treats, they symbolise fertility, new life and growth.

Join in the dance

Look around now at the creatures of the natural world and join in the dance! Be like the Mad March Hare and rejoice in the abundant energy of the Spring Equinox. Lean against a tree and feel the rising of the life force within from deep within Mother Earth. Be as one, with the tree and the Earth. For our plans may take flight at this time of the year, but to be successful they must also remain grounded in reality.

A simple Spring Equinox meditation to focus on renewal and self-healing

To help you move into this Equinox and beyond feeling fresh and ready to grow to your highest potential, try the following:

  • Take some time to settle your thoughts, drawing nice deep breaths and imagining each inward breath filling you with calm, fresh energy. As you breathe out, release tension and worry with each breath.
  • Imagine that you are a seed, full of life. Plant this seed of yourself into the warm, moist soil of Mother Earth and watch as it gently begins to open. Feel your roots growing and reaching down into the deep Earth, drinking the water and absorbing the life-giving nutrients in the soil.
  • Notice how your shoots emerge from the seed, sensing the light of the Sun and growing upwards until they unfold in the warm air. Your leaves gently unfold to soak up the Sun’s rays. You grow strong, your roots anchoring you into the Earth as they draw up the nourishment from the ground. Your shoots grow more leaves, and you blossom and flourish.

Everything you need is given to you. For your growth, for your well-being. You are in radiant health!

Spring is here now, and the direction is forwards! I hope that each of you will find your own unique direction and grow something precious and new in your life to celebrate and honour the energies of this Spring Equinox.
