Witches: Signs & Symbols

Last Updated: November 6th, 2024

Witches

In honour of the Halloween season, we are focusing on the icons, signs & symbols related to witches and witchcraft.

The practice of witchcraft dates back to ancient times, with roots in Ancient Egypt and widespread across the globe. For the Celts, “Wicca” or “witch” was closely linked to nature, magic, and the occult.

Central to witchcraft is magic, and throughout history, witches have been depicted through symbolic images incorporating tools, symbols, and animal familiars used in their spellcasting and spiritual practices.

While the stereotypical image of an ugly woman clad in black exists, there is significant symbolism behind the physical attributes commonly associated with witches today.

Black Cat, Cauldon & Broom

Black Cat – In the past, people believed that a black cat owned by a witch was considered a present from evil forces, representing darkness and misfortune.

Broom – Crafted from Birch representing birth and rebirth, Hazel symbolising fertility and wisdom or Yew signifying death and resurrection, brooms are employed to cleanse away negative energies while also carrying phallic connotations. Legend has it that witches soar on their broomsticks during rituals celebrating fertility.

Cauldron – The cauldron holds significance in specific rituals, serving as a powerful symbol. It represents the concepts of the womb, fertility, and rebirth. Additionally, during its use, it symbolises the presence of the four elements: earth, water, fire, and air.

Chalice, Potions & Raven

Chalice – The chalice is commonly utilised in predicting the future, symbolising a witch’s psychic abilities, intuition, and emotional depth.

Potions – Crafting spells can have both positive and negative effects. The components used in spellcasting are often symbolic; for instance, incorporating a toad into a spell could indicate malicious intent.

Raven – The raven holds significance in witchcraft, representing both healing properties and omens. Additionally, it is linked to the concept of shapeshifting.

Spell Book, Toad & Wand

Spell Book – The witch’s spell book likely originates from the magic books, known as grimoires, used during medieval times as a symbol of power.

Toad – The toad, often associated with the underworld, is a symbol of death, darkness, and poison. It is frequently depicted as a familiar of witches.

Wand – The wand holds strong connections to witchcraft, symbolising a witch’s energy and strength. Typically crafted from various materials, wood being the most prevalent due to its effective energy conductivity. A magic wand serves as a tool for channelling and directing energy in spells or specific rituals.
