Pentacles: Tarot – Minor Arcana, Ace to Seven

Last Updated: July 24th, 2024

Pentacles

Pentacle cards are associated with all thing’s ‘material’, such as possessions, property, money, as well as your status and career, or anything else that may be considered valuable to the individual. These cards primarily govern tangible aspects that we can see, touch, and feel – not imaginary desires we might wish for.

Astrologically speaking, Pentacles are connected to the Earth element and zodiac signs Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo. This suit deals with the practical aspects of life and work, commitments, and routines. When these cards appear in a spread, they convey a general message that it’s time to take stock in a matter-of-fact way – deal with what is actually happening rather than what you think might happen or want to happen.

The Ace of Pentacles

Like all aces in the suits, this card deals with a beginning or something new. In this case, it is likely to be a material venture that brings monetary value to you as well as an enhanced work status.

If we go back some time, the Ace of Pentacles still had monetary value but in the form of wedding dowries. It is still possible today that this card can have the meaning of an emotional alliance and could refer to an exchange of rings, engagement, or wedding. Equally, the partnership could be one of business colleagues on equal footing with material gains shared.

Whatever the circumstances, the Ace of Pentacles is a very positive card. Your venture should flourish; however, do keep your feet on the ground and pay careful attention to the cards around it in the spread in case they warn of any confusion that could ensue.

Two of Pentacles

Now is a time of balance; you may feel that your life is one big juggling act. Perhaps work versus your personal life is competing for attention, or you have commitments that are taking time away from everything and everyone. You will undoubtedly need to expend a lot of energy, and at times it will be difficult to manage – but persevere, and you will succeed.

This card can also signify a period in your life when it seems like there is not enough money to cover all outgoings. No sooner have you paid one bill another expense arises. Maybe you recently took on significant debt, such as a mortgage or business loan, which may be weighing heavily on your mind. Remember that no gain comes without some risk, and the burden will lessen over time as you begin to see the benefits of your investment.

Three of Pentacles

You have laid the foundations for something truly successful. Now, it is time to nurture it and help it grow. This can also apply to a person, such as a colleague or working partner. You may have faced some initial challenges, but with those resolved and better mutual understanding, you are prepared to advance to the next level.

The Three of Pentacles could indicate a job offer coming your way. It is likely to be a lucrative opportunity that builds upon your past achievements and successes. Perhaps someone has recommended you for this position, or you have been sought after by recruiters. It appears to be a significant step forward in your career towards your long-term goals. For those who are self-employed, a new contract might be on the horizon. This could greatly boost your self-esteem and reputation within your industry.

Keep an eye out for the Six of Wands and Justice cards in your spread as they enhance the likelihood that the Three of Pentacles signifies upcoming rewards for your efforts.

Four of Pentacles

If the Four of Pentacles appears in a spread, it suggests a preference for financial security and having one’s finances well managed – essentially, having money saved up. This card symbolises wealth attained through hard work and a serious approach to responsibilities. It doesn’t necessarily indicate being wealthy but rather stable and living within one’s means.

Similar to other Tarot cards, the Four of Pentacles holds additional interpretations. It cautions against becoming overly focused on material possessions at the expense of everything else. Being able to give financially is crucial when possible, and is often tied to emotional generosity. If you’ve faced financial challenges before, you may relate to hoarding tendencies, reluctance to spend, and keeping resources solely for yourself. However, leading a life devoid of risks or spending on others or enjoyable things can lead to long-term unhappiness. Striking a balance is essential – allocate some for spending and save some for later.

Five of Pentacles

The ‘Five’ cards are all challenging, and the Five of Pentacles is no exception. You may currently find yourself in a situation where there is not enough balance in your life. Perhaps you have become overly focused on work to enhance your finances, leaving little room for anything else.

At times, when certain aspects of our lives are out of sync, it can lead to feelings of missing out and envy. Social media can exacerbate this feeling by portraying that everyone else has a better life than you, while yours seems to revolve around work, sleep, rinse, and repeat. This might cause you to feel isolated and lonely, leading you to self-pity and reluctance to accept help from others even when necessary.

If this card appears for you, remember that it can be a catalyst for positive change; the situation doesn’t have to be permanent. Reflect on where adjustments can be made to bring more balance into all areas of your life—it could prevent you from losing something or someone valuable.

Six of Pentacles

The Six of Pentacles revolves around the giving or receiving of money, with emotions playing a crucial role. How do you truly ‘feel’ about giving and receiving?

There are various reasons for receiving money, such as payment from work, assistance from a friend during tough times, a birthday present, or an inheritance. The opportunities are endless. This card prompts us to reflect on our emotions regarding receiving money. Are you thankful because you urgently need the funds? Do you worry about being indebted to the giver beyond repaying the loan? Does it seem like there has been a power shift between both parties?

Likewise, if you are offering money to someone, consider examining your intentions. Are you motivated by genuine care, or do you feel obligated to give? Or perhaps you believe having them owe you would be beneficial?

The surrounding cards in the spread will provide clarity on this matter, especially if you sense unfairness and feel that your fair share has not been received.

Seven of Pentacles

It is time to feel pleased with yourself; you have come a long way. However, resting on your laurels is only a good idea for a short time – as you still have a long way to go! A holiday may be a great idea, but spend some time using the downtime to review your skills and abilities. How can you use them afresh to further reach your goals?

‘Seven’ cards usually depict the end of something; the ‘what’ could be anything – from changing jobs, starting a business, selling a house, doing charitable work, starting a family, coming back to employment after a career break, etc. Whatever the circumstances, you are likely to feel daunted and nervous about the potential changes. But this card is encouraging change – embrace the challenge.

Pentacles are related to finances but also encompass spiritual, mental, and emotional feelings and growth. It’s okay if the ‘new’ thing is a pastime or something that fulfils these needs without financial gain.
