Halloween, has of course, long been associated with mystery and the unknown and unexplained. From ghost stories, to Séances and from haunted houses to Tarot cards, we love everything about tall tales and things that go bump in the night!
Long before, Halloween was a season of dressing-up, carving pumpkins, going trick-or-treating and eating sweets. There was a fascination for understanding things that seems inexplainable. People wanted to know can we communicate with those that have passed away, are there things in the world that we cannot explain, but that we can seem to see, feel and experience – ghosts being just one example.
Ancestral Customs
Every culture, has its own take on Spirits, our Ancestors and the world beyond this spiritual plain. In fact, many of the Halloween traditions that we follow, even loosely today, started with customs developed from the changing of the seasons, from the closeness of the boundary beyond those living and those that were dead, and about warding off evil spirits and welcoming in positive energy.
Even though our relationship with some of these past ideas may have faded, the fascination around all things spooky has remained. Sharing a good ghost story around a campfire, visiting places that are supposed to be haunted, sharing our real-life experiences of sounds in our homes, and things mysteriously moving, appearing or disappearing, and of course our delight in watching super-natural TV shows and scary or downright horror movies.
Why Do We Love to Be Scared?
There is no doubt, that even in these modern times – living in a world that is often quite scary, for all sorts of reasons, we still seem to love a scary story – if we can watch it at full volume with surround sound – all the better. It’s a curious thing, but we seem to enjoy being frightened, when we know we are actually safe.
Watching a psychological thriller, a horror movie or reading a fantasy novel allows us to experience fear, excitement and especially anticipation of what might come next (the ultimate – he’s behind you, or don’t turn around, or don’t go in that room feeling), but without actually being in any danger. It gives us permission to delve into the darker and stranger sides of life, free from the knowledge that the boogey man can’t really get to us.
Of course, films, books, TV shows and history surrounding Halloween can also spark our curiosity and feed into some of life’s bigger questions. Do we know things, are we being given messages, or do we just have a really keen sense of trusting our gut instincts, or a highly developed intuition. Ultimately, is there a consciousness beyond what we can feel, see and experience?
A Developed Sense of Spirituality
Those that have a well-developed sense of spirituality, have probably considered these questions and more, at Halloween and beyond, and are more than likely accepting that some questions will always remain. Spirituality isn’t ever really about certainty, but about remaining thoughtful and open to all possibilities.
So, as you head into this years Samhain, why not take a moment to consider what the unknown means to you. Do you feel curious, and like it is something to investigate, fearful and like you’d rather not know or understand, or do you just simply put it down to yet another of life’s great mysteries!
