A History of Psychic Powers

Throughout the history of mankind, individuals have displayed an uncanny ability to predict events before they have even begun to unfold. Sometimes these individuals operated on their own, sometimes they came together in groups. Sometimes they were ostracised and ridiculed by society, sometimes they were kept at the sides of rulers and royalty.

People's relationship with psychics has always been something of a strange one. Clearly, the information that a psychic can give is valuable and, in some situations, incredibly beneficial, but there have always been people who worry that psychic readings allow us access to information that we aren't supposed to know. There is also the potential for a misinterpreted reading or an unforeseen event to result in a backlash against those who are supposed to warn people of the future.

Events such as the witch hunts during the Middle Ages or the burning of prophets by the Scythians show what can happen when public opinion turns against a psychic, but whilst they remained in people's favour they might find themselves treated like the Ancient Greek prophets, receiving gifts of food or gold in order to curry favour and receive a psychic reading. There were also the Ancient Egyptian kings who had to demonstrate ability as a prophet if they were to rule.

Of course, nowadays we don't burn professional psychics, nor do we have to bring them gifts of precious metals and rare birds, or trek to the deepest caves on the highest mountains to receive a reading. Instead, we can have a psychic contact us over the phone or the internet and give us a psychic reading there and then. It's much better this way.
