We’ve all gone through our share of dark times. Realistically, life isn’t always going to go the way we planned and sometimes things take a turn for the worst, leaving us in stress or pain. How we deal with these ‘down’ phases shapes us all individually as people, and often we can come out the other side stronger. Dark times can fall upon us at any time in our lives, and few of us can go a lifetime without experiencing some kind of pain. Triggers including problems with money, addiction, family issues or illness can manifest themselves in different, challenging emotions such as grief, fear, anger or guilt. Emotions which are just as much of a part of the human condition as happiness, joy and love, and shouldn’t be feared or left unattended. When confronted with physical or emotional pain, we are faced with two choices. To shut down and hide from the world or to conquer the dark times and survive. Sometimes it can feel like separating yourself from those around you is the easier option, however being alone in the dark can be distressing, so surround yourself with friends and family. Remember that all healing enhanced by support from caring people. Our loved ones can provide a support system through listening to how you are feeling, and help you to see the bigger picture, keeping you grounded in reality. Good friends won’t let you suffer alone so don’t be afraid to take the first steps to approach someone you trust for help. Attending to dark emotions leaves us far more likely to pull through and see the light on the other side, and can even leave us with a profound new gratitude for life. It can take a lot of courage to surrender to these powerful emotions, but use this month to begin rising above the darkness. The longer and lighter days of April can be a great time to start engaging in the world around you, refocusing your mind, heart and spirit.
