A new study has found that potatoes may be able to reduce blood pressure with no additional weight gain, as long as they are cooked in the right way (boiled, mashed, baked or microwaved is best). This is thought to be because one of the chemicals used in blood pressure medication is also found in potatoes.
However, the study has been criticised as it only used a sample of eighteen people, all of whom were already on blood pressure medication and who, as a part of the study, had their diet strictly regulated. It was also conducted over a period of just a month, not long enough for any long-lasting beneficial effects to be properly measured.
