If you find you’re more likely to gravitate towards a sofa than out of the door and down to the gym, it might have something to do with your genes. A gene has been discovered which is responsible for the creation of AMP-activated protein kinase, an enzyme which is linked to the levels of mitochondria found in your muscles and how efficiently they can use glucose for energy.
When this gene was removed from mice, they were much less willing to run around and tired out much faster than mice which still had the gene. Whether this plays out in humans too isn’t revealed by the report, as no research has been done into whether the gene is found in some humans but not others, and whether its presence correlates with increased levels of activity.
It’s also worth noting that the presence of mitochondria and the efficiency of glucose use is also affected by exercise, and by exercising you’ll improve both anyway, making it easier to exercise in the future.
